Title:
How Happy Are You?
When:
06.11.2008 19.00 h - 20.30 h
Where:
The Dana Centre - South Kensington
Category:
Education/Courses/Workshops

Description

What makes you tick? When do you feel at your best? Does work get you down or are you motivated by it? During our life, our emotional responses change, and the way we learn and think evolves. Sometimes these changes are positive – but not always.

We learn throughout life and in so-doing, we might uncover hidden talents that can take us in unexpected directions. Learning is not just studying books, but discovering how to do things like play the piano, cook, write a novel: things that enrich our lives, from infancy to old age.

Yet how often do we allow the routines at home or work to create a barrier to doing things that would make us happy and fulfilled? The challenges that confront us at work and the people we work with can be stressful. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

And when we feel overwhelmed, are there ways to intervene? Are ‘cognitive enhancers’ – drugs that boost the brain - a quick-fix solution or can they really help a person flourish?

Foresight, based in the Government Office for Science, has conducted a major study into Mental Capital and Wellbeing. Mental capital means the brain’s ability to process information, our emotional intelligence, our interaction with others and managing stress throughout life. Can investment in people’s mental capital and well-being help ward off mental illness? Our speakers will discuss how to make the most of ourselves in 21st Century.

Description

The dana centre is a stylish, purpose-built venue in London (UK). It is a place for adults to take part in exciting, informative and innovative debates about contemporary science, technology and culture.

No two days will be the same at the dana centre. It's the place for experimental dialogue events, blending the best from science, art, performance and multimedia to provoke discussion and real engagement with the key issues of the day. In the dana centre you'll see science delivered in a very different way, everything from Edinburgh-Fringe-style stand-up comics debunking science myths to updates on radical research, handling sessions of rarely seen objects from the Science Museum's collection and challenging debates on modern science.

State-of-the-art digital facilities link the Centre and its events with venues all over the UK, those on the Internet and everyone with a mobile phone. If you can't make it to the dana centre in person, you can join the debate on-line.

The events focus on themes that are important to you and present them in new and attractive ways - all in a lively, informal atmosphere. If you care about how the science behind the headlines affects you and your environment, want to challenge leading experts face to face, argue the case for valuing animals over human embryos, or learn how to make ice cream in 90 seconds, then check out what's on at the dana centre.

The dana centre is a collaboration between the BA (British Association for the Advancement of Science), the European Dana Alliance for the Brain and the Science Museum. It is part of the new Wellcome Wolfson Building, which is supported by four principal donors - the Wellcome Trust, the Wolfson Foundation, The Dana Foundation and the Garfield Weston Foundation.
