Description
With over 50 paintings, drawings and digital images plus sculpture and ceramics from the early nineteenth century to the present day, Frames of Mind explores the development and benefits of art therapy in the treatment of mental illness. Over 30 different artists are represented from the hospital’s archive, including paintings and sketches by Richard Dadd and Louis Wain.
The Bethlem Royal Hospital was one of Europe's first psychiatric hospitals and initially developed a reputation of some notoriety which led to the word ‘Bedlam’ being used to describe lunatic asylums in general. In contrast, today the hospital houses an active occupational therapy department, well-known for its vibrant exterior and focus on the arts, with its own gallery displaying the work of current mental health service users.
Frames of Mind also shows how much mental healthcare has changed and improved since Bedlam opened in the 13th century. Visitors will be able to follow the history of mental healthcare from the foundation of the Bethlem hospital in 1247 to the present day and find out about the art-based care services provided in Croydon today.
Free entry.
Closed Sundays.
