OCTOBER PLENTY Sunday 26th October 2008 from 12noon
As I can't find the info to add an event either, I'm going to follow Matt's lead!
OCTOBER PLENTY
Sunday 26th October 2008 from 12noon
the Lions part invites everyone to their 14th AUTUMN HARVEST CELEBRATION beginning on the Bankside near Shakespeare’s Globe and continuing at Southwark’s historic Borough Market.
A collective celebration of the seasons, weather and food, this year’s OCTOBER PLENTY mixes ancient seasonal customs and contemporary festivity with two plays from THE CANTERBURY TALES, written by Southwark’s first literary celebrity Geoffrey Chaucer.
This year’s OCTOBER PLENTY is also part of Borough Market’s celebration of ‘Apple Day’.
OCTOBER PLENTY is FREE, FUN and PHOTO-FRIENDLY for ALL THE FAMILY
THE CORN QUEEN
Heavy with wheat, fruit & vegetables, the magnificent CORN QUEEN will appear in procession in front of the Globe with her company of actors, along with the traditional HOBBY HORSE, strung with cakes & loaves will join them, led by the extraordinary BERRY MAN, the autumnal Green Man, decked with wild fruits & foliage.
THE PROCESSION
Join the procession of music, flags and spectacle through the streets to the famous BOROUGH MARKET, to sample the food, cider and apple juice on offer. See the Green Market come alive and join in the APPLE GAMES and DANCING to celebrate the harvest.
THE PLAY
The Company perform new versions of two of the infamous CANTERBURY TALES by Geoffrey Chaucer. Rollicking and rich with vibrant verse, they have inspired many adaptations for performance. Witness them today in new versions for the occasion, spiced with present day festive spirit and song. Apples cascade out into the crowd as the CORN QUEENE is opened up at the end of the plays. The celebrated ‘EXECUTION OF JOHN BARLEYCORN’ finishes the festivities with the now traditional Stripping of the Corn Queene.
THE STORY ORCHARD
All afternoon a glade of young apple trees creates a space for stories & story telling (for children of all ages) about apples, markets & harvest.
APPLES
Discover & explore the apples of old England before they all disappear! BROGDALE HORTICULTURAL TRUST will be in the Green Market all day, offering tastes of the old, the rare, the local & the downright odd. Bring your own mystery apples & see if Brogdale can identify them.
At the end of the day, everyone is invited to visit & decorate the historic Cross Bones Graveyard in Red Cross Way.
